Nonsurgical Options for Weight Loss

If you have a BMI under 35 or are not ready for surgical weight loss procedures, there are now nonsurgical options available to you. Dr. Nicole Fearing explains two of these options: the endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty and the gastric balloon.

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty

The endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that reduces the size of your stomach using an endoscopic suturing device. Unlike traditional surgery, there are no incisions involved. The procedure is done on an outpatient basis, meaning you can go home the same day.

During the procedure, you will be placed under general anesthesia. A thin, flexible tube with a small camera and a stitching device is inserted through your mouth and into your stomach. Stitches are then placed to create a tube-like shape from the top to the bottom of your stomach. While your stomach remains intact, this new shape reduces its capacity by up to 80%, significantly decreasing the amount of food you can eat.

Gastric Balloon

Another nonsurgical option for weight loss is the gastric balloon. This procedure is also performed on an outpatient basis. After being placed under anesthesia, a deflated gastric balloon is inserted through your mouth and placed in your stomach. The balloon is then filled with a safe saline solution until it reaches the size of a grapefruit. This process usually takes less than 30 minutes.

The gastric balloon remains in your stomach for approximately six months, during which time most patients experience the most significant weight loss. After the six-month period, you will be placed under anesthesia again to have the balloon deflated and removed. Dr. Nicole Fearing will continue working with you to develop and maintain healthy habits that will help you achieve your desired weight loss.
